1 December Riding in the rain

Our first full day with the scooter and a mission to travel to the south coast of the island to visit Grenada Marine, the Volvo engine specialists, at the marina at St Davids.

Some of our friends expressed concern when they saw us about to set off. Isn't it dangerous to ride a bike? Anything is dangerous if you do it badly, and yes, a scooter doesn't offer as much protection from personal injury as being a passenger in a car, but I trust David implicitly. He is an experienced, confident and skilled rider, reading the road ahead, anticipating vehicle movements and keeping us safe. We've hired many bikes and have our own helmets and, after our visit to Ace hardware, we also have yellow high visibility vests to wear.

David drives and I'm the back seat navigator with sat nav on the phone to find route. There are plenty of bends, hills and unpainted road bumps but the scenery is great.

It was a long way to St Davids to find they didn't have the items in stock made longer by having to take cover from torrential downpours in a bus shelter.

On the way home we stopped to visit Westerhall rum distillery. In normal times there are guided tours and tastings but due to Covid the tours are suspended. However, I asked and we were allowed to wander through the grounds.
