I was up early while the boys were having a lie in and took my cup of tea up into the cockpit. As I stepped out into the cockpit to take a check on the day with a cup of tea in hand. I was greeted with a ‘pfffuuufff’ from the side of the boat. It was a dolphin. This one was very friendly and swam around and around the boat. I called David to come see and I swear the dolphin stopped and raised his head out of the water to look at us. He was definitely not scared so I grabbed my mask, snorkel, fins and camera and slipped into the water with him. He kept swimming around the boat with David pointing to where he was and he kept getting closer and closer until he stopped in front and looked at me. It’s a magical moment when you can interact with a wild animal in their environment. I’ve been in the water with dolphins before, but never so close or for so long. He stayed with us for 3 hours and the people on the next boat kayaked over to us to swim with him too. Afterwards we found out that there are a number of solitary dolphins around here and each has a name.
A week before my swim with dolly the dolphin I was going to bed one evening and went to the loo. I lifted the lid and there in the bowl, waving not drowning, was a baby octopus boldly looking up at me. A stowaway! The cry went up ‘Captain, Captain, what’s this octopus doing in my bowl?’ ‘The crawl Madam.’ As I tried to flush him out he was crawling up the bowl to hide under the rim. And that’s where he stayed all night until David disarmed him with the toilet brush. He must have been sucked up in take pipe for the seawater flush. We also had a baby fish sucked up and at night you get the phosphorescent organisms that light up like fire lies when you make them move. Very decorative.
