Finally the weather window to make the 36 hour passage along the inhospitable north coast of DR and across the notorious Mona Passage to Puerto Rico opened. The last day of the new and looking forward to a bright new year. Everyone was chomping on the bit after 3 weeks in the equivalent of Hotel California, ie you can check in, but you can never leave. Leaving Luperon is hard as the number who came for 2 weeks and stayed for 7 years can testify.
We upped anchor and motored out into the channel. Before we could leave the clutches of Luperon we had to kiss the mud of the estuary with the keel. Yes, grounded on the Christopher Columbus bank once more. Fortunately we could power ourselves off this time.
It was an armada of 7 boats that motored off into the dawn that morning all eagerly looking forward to a fine day at sea once more.
At 4.30pm the engine revs gave a hiccup, later a cough and all was not well. Though how this would play out we weren't sure. It was an anxious evening ahead.
