Saturday 18 January Rai Lay beach

The wind was gusting twenty knots this morning for a fast sail south from uninhabited Pak Bia to the busy beach resort of Ao Nang (a suburb of Krabi) and our first step on main land Thailand. We had needs – a credit top for the phone and lunch at a restaurant. After almost a week of eating on board it was a chance to let someone else do the cooking and washing up. David also had need for a Magnum ice cream, alas I was too full after lunch.
It was a bit too windy in the anchorage with the easterly blowing over the low peninsula on our nose. Less than a mile south of here is the prettier and more protected, Rai Lay beach. It's another busy resort beach but is backed by high rocks which cuts out the wind. Rai Lay can only be reached by boat, the high cliffs between it and Ao Nang and it and Krabi town mean there are no roads, the only way to get here is by boat. Longtail boats which use regular diesel engines for propulsion and sound like helicopters from a distance and tractors when they are skimming your stern. A pretty beach but very busy with boats coming and going and the beach packed with sun worshippers. However, people mean shops and restaurants, enough to keep us all happy.
