Wednesday 18 March Coron town, Busuangas island

shanty town, Coron
We blew into Busuangas island with a typhoon developing in the Pacific ocean. Being unpredictable things we chose to be close to a safe anchorage. The first place we stopped was at Coron town, deep in the back of the harbour behind an island. The danger was neither imminent nor certain; at the time the storm was predicted 5 days from the Philippines. In the end it harmlessly dissipated.
Meanwhile we were having a fun time in Coron, enjoying some of the many, many restaurants and coffee bars, doing some re-provisioning in a western style outlet and relaxing. The seas around Busuangas have a number of WW2 wrecks; axillary ships from the Japanese navy sunk by Americans in 1944. So once we'd done the re-provisioning we were going to do some diving.

very full bus

getting diesel

We also needed a top up of diesel. Without the convenience of a dock to back Jackster up to it was a mission. We took 6 jerry jugs in the dinghy to the town dock, carried them up the lane to the main street where we hailed a trike to take us to the petrol station. While they were being filled I watched an impossibly full bus, impossibly shiny bus pull in for fuel. Look at how the boxes are stacked inside and on top – they may have been a chicken or two stuffed under a seat too. The tricycle driver helped load our jerry jugs and also helped to off load when we got back to the dock. Then it was a simple matter of putting into the dinghy and hauling them out at the other end. Not as easy as filling your car in a petrol station but a better work out.
