The
first day of our long trip from Borneo, past Singapore and to
Langkawi wasn't as good as we might have hoped.
We
were delayed leaving the marina by having to clear out from Labuan (a
requirement as this is an island with greater autonomy) and
administration hiccups at the marine office. However, on the plus
side the engine and gear box were working.
Once
out of the harbour and with our course set SW to Jerujong, a man made
harbour on the Brunei coast, the wind was on the nose and then we
crossed paths with a tug towing an oil platform constrained in their
ability to manoeuvre, we diverted south to pass behind it (never
challenge a ship bigger than yourself). But, yes there's a but
here, at the normal 1700 to 1800 revs we normally motor there was a
vibration on the engine. What? Why?
Deciding
to continue on to Jerujong, 15 miles away, we gave the engine help
unfurling sails to give lift and support on our course. It was
slower progress then expected as the wind increased to to over 20
knots and we reached the entrance to the man made harbour (built to
the order of the Sultan's brother, Prince Jeffrey (?)) which extends
a mile and a half off shore at sunset.
I was
so pleased to have made it in safely and to be in a sheltered
anchorage.
