All
the boats we were with in Ascension have now safely arrived in
Jacare; Gaia, Inspiration Lady and Ongemak and we all went together to the fresh market by train on the first Saturday.
The market is open every day, but on Saturday the local
producers set up their stalls too making it much larger.
Cabedelo market |
From Jacare it is easy to catch the train to Cabeldelo. The 9.36am
train was packed with locals and us yachties going to town for a little
shopping.
Every time
we have stood on the platform at Jacare station there has been a small owl, a Burrowing
owl, sitting on the same spot of wall. I checked on Google and found
that Burrowing owls live in holes in the ground and are often seen in the day time. Apparently they are quite common here.
Little owl at the train station |
But I digress, back to the market in Cabedelo. I like this market. It is clean. The stall holders smile and even seem to
understand our basic Spanish.
Fruit
and vegetables are plentiful, good quality and it's produce on
steroids! Avocados the size of melons, carrots like batons and
passion fruit which make oranges look like satsumas. And the market
is clean, really clean. The attached meat and fish market smells
fresh too.
whoppers! |
Upstairs
there are small shops and food stalls where we picked a selection of
local snacks to go with the small, sweet coffee they serve.
