From
our base in the lagoon at French Cay, or Key, we could see half a
dozen mooring balls on the seaward side of the reef. When we arrived
the liveaboard, Roatan Agressor was tied to one from which we
concluded the diving can't be too shabby. Indeed it was very good
wall diving.
For
the first few days there was no wind and the sea was glassy smooth,
perfect for taking the dink outside the reef, either through the Coco
View Resort pass or the French Cay pass we brought Jackster through.
We dived almost all the sites including the Bud wreck. Bud is a tug
boat which sits in 15m in a gully on top of the reef, the orange
mooring ball was tied to mid ships. It's an easy dive and the wall
below the wreck drops off deep.
To
explore further along the coast we booked a trip with Subway 44 to
take us east and dive Caribe Point and the Chimney. With David and I
as the only guests on the boat we had plenty of room and the personal
service of our dive leader, Enoch. Caribe Point was another nice
part of the wall and we saw a seahorse. On the next dive at Chimney
there was another seahorse and a large King Crab hiding under an over
hang.
We
liked the diving in Roatan; the water is warm and clear, no currents
so easier and safer to dive on your own, mooring balls for the dinghy
and sites close to the big boat. For me it's the best in the
Caribbean so far; walls covered with huge barrel sponges, healthy
corals, lots of soft corals, seahorses and big crabs, some nice fish
and the occasional colourful slug.
