During
the winter months Mexico and Belize and are affected by Northers
approximately ever seven days as a cold front moves south form
America and across the Yucatan peninsula; strong north winds with
associated heavy rain. In spring they are less frequent and weaker
as the season progresses.
The
forecast predicted a norther would be passing over the south part of
Belize on Friday night with potential winds of up to 35 knots and
heavy rain. We chose to anchor in Pelican Cay lagoon (16 40.83N 88
11.42W, 21m mud) which the cruising guide indicated had 360°
swell protection and good holding. The rain was heavy, the
lightning stayed over the mainland, winds no more than 33 knots and
we had all the room we needed. Sweet.

The
day before we'd been out in the dinghy to explore the several
mangrove covered cays surrounding the lagoon. Three had fishing
camps – local families using them as a base for fishing forays.
One had a small resort – Hideaway with one guest cabin, a fish
supper for U$24, a bar and an aggressive dog. We didn't see the dog,
the American owner / operate locked him up when there were guests. He
said he needed the dog to keep unwanted visitors from landing...

I
did some snorkelling outside the reef and was impressed by the
healthy condition of the corals and visibility. Still not many
fish.
