It's not a big island, perhaps three miles long and a couple of miles wide. It's affectionately known as Chappy island and the first thing we saw as we cycled away from the ferry was the colourful beach huts of the Chappaquiddick Beach club painted patriotic red, white and blue. We've seen many homes flying the Stars and Stripes, far more than you would ever see a Union flag in the UK.

Perhaps I could have done with help with my navigation on the island as I missed the turn to the Poucha bridge and we ended up on the south side at the entrance to the Wasque nature reserve. The upside to our unplanned detour was meeting park ranger Patricia who was manning the entrance gate this morning. We had a very pleasant chat with Patricia and a welcome break to catch our breath for the cycle back to the right road.
Back on the right road and the black top turns to a sand top all the way down to a car park and bike rack at the beginning of the bridge. Poucha bridge is the other entrance spot to the beach and dunes park. We left the bikes and walked the bridge. Today there are fences to keep vehicles out of the water.
