19 July Chappy Island cycling

The gap of water separating Martha's Vineyard and Chappaquiddick islands is perhaps 100m.  Vehicles use a couple of ferries that shuttle back and forth.  We just wheeled our dinghy up on to a bit of beach next to the ferry terminal and off loaded our bikes there.
It's not a big island, perhaps three miles long and a couple of miles wide.  It's affectionately known as Chappy island and the first thing we saw as we cycled away from the ferry was the colourful beach huts of the Chappaquiddick Beach club painted patriotic red, white and blue.  We've seen many homes flying the Stars and Stripes, far more than you would ever see a Union flag in the UK.

I have to admit we are sticky beakers.  We'd come to see that bridge. The one Edward Kennedy drove off and killed Mary Jo Kopechne fifty years ago on the night of 18 /19 July 1969.  The next day, 20th July 1969, his brother's promise to put a man on the moon happened.  I hadn't realized both events happened a day apart. I was eight years old at the time so the moon landing would naturally have been more interesting than a political scandal.
Perhaps I could have done with help with my navigation on the island as I missed the turn to the Poucha bridge and we ended up on the south side at the entrance to the Wasque nature reserve.  The upside to our unplanned detour was meeting park ranger Patricia who was manning the entrance gate this morning.  We had a very pleasant chat with Patricia and a welcome break to catch our breath for the cycle back to the right road.
Back on the right road and the black top turns to a sand top all the way down to a car park and bike rack at the beginning of the bridge.  Poucha bridge is the other entrance spot to the beach and dunes park.  We left the bikes and walked the bridge.  Today there are fences to keep vehicles out of the water.

On the fence near the bikes there was a simple bunch of flowers and a hand written note 'Mary Jo not forgotten'.
