18 November. Waiting to leave Charleston, US

As with all the best laid plans, circumstances change.  We came in expecting to stay five days. Now ten days on the dock and we are ready to leave, destination north Bahamas..unless the weather forecast changes.

We came into Charleston to wait for a weather window to cross to the Bahamas and  buy a high spec GPS to go with the new CP and a Raymarine multi viewer for the nav station from West Marine. The GPS arrived and a d8ay later it was followed by Artic weather. Temperatures dipped as low as freezing with high winds and heavy rain. Not pleasant sailing weather so we extended our stay in the marina.

The cold weather was replaced by gale force winds and heavy rain. Out to sea it was 25 to 40, gusting to 50; a good time to stay onboard and get on with boat jobs. Jackster got a deep clean, the new GPs fitted and David and I indulged in trying out the local restaurants in the evening. There was also plenty of time to finish our cruising provisions for the season. With all the fuel we carry, full water tank and full cupboards we are sitting lower in the water than normal.

As I write this we are ready to leave apart from one last thing. Two nights ago I prepared an on passage meal using my pressure cooker and it broke. The mecahnism for closing the lid has broken beyond repair - cheap Chinese workmanship bought in Malaysia only four years ago. Online searching and many phone calls for a replacement revealed there were no small stove top pressure cookers in stock in town. The only option was an overnight delivery from Amazon. I need a pressure cooker that much. So we sit waiting for delivery. Once we have the package in hand we are off. Away to the sunshine.

I'm hoping my next post will report we are back in the tropics....unless we have to change our plans. After all, it is a boat.

Update: in a couple of hours our plans have changed.  No surprise.  Our parcel arrived at 5pm - too late to leave tonight so we've revised our departure to tomorrow morning.
