10 Feb 2009  Sailing downwind to St Thomas

What joy!  Sailing downhill from BVI to USVI instead of motoring into a head wind.  We were flying and covered the short distance in half the time it took to go the other way.   We flew along the south coast of St Thomas and pulled into the natural harbour of Charlotte Amalie.  It’s the crater of an extinct volcano with room for 3 cruise ships to tie up along the dock and easily 100 yachts to anchor with enough room to swing a catamaran.   The holding is a dream too – never heard of anyone dragging in this bay – and you can get WiFi on the boat.

We developed a soft spot for Charlotte helped by finding Gordons gin at $5 / £3.60 a bottle if you were able to buy in bulk.  This is cheaper than shampoo or tonic water per litre and tastes far better than the shampoo.  By the time we came to leave I estimate we had bought close to 30 litres.  Have you noticed that alcohol never has no use by date yet when you buy salt there is one?  In side-by-side tests which one do you think would go off first?  It’s an unfair comparison because we’d have drunk the gin before we could spill all the salt.
