9 Feb 2009 Day trip to the States

Today we made a flying visit to US territory to get new visa stamps in our passports.  We left Jackster moored in Sopers Hole, south tip of BVIs and hopped a ferry to St Johns.  Twenty minutes later and we had new 90-day visas that would allow us to sail in the USVIs.

Bureaucracy is a major feature of our new life.  Some countries make it very easy and pleasant while others have set out a minefield of forms to complete, practised their sternest looks and devised an obstacle course of paperwork, stamps, an assortment of offices in different buildings and incomplete instructions.  We can do no more than smile, write and make donations to the local tax office. And then I walk out, scream quietly into a corner and develop the urge for a strong G&T.

G&T is the best product in our stores.  A cure all for celebrating with friends or commiserating over red tape.
