Saturday 7 January Tall Ships Race day

Glimpse of a racing yacht (circled)

Looking out into the rain
Instead of gazing out at the spectacle of canvas straining in the breeze around us we peered through the deluge hoping to catch a glimpse of the hardy souls taking part in the Tall Ship race. We did see sails, some almost touching the water as the boats heeled over in 40 knot winds, and agreed we'd made the right decision. How much fun would it have been out there sodden and cold for three hours? It was disappointing to watch and not take part and not to be at the yacht club for the hangi (underground oven) and entertainment in the evening. Instead we watched a poor film – a poor substitute.

  1. Last year, the Tall Ships' race was balmy, but Sailing Week saw some carnage, including collisions and overturned catamaran. It rained 225mm around Waitangi Day: mild climate with wild weather, int'it.
