| another day, another beach |
Yesterday we visited the village. Today we walked to a beach on the other side of the island. Pam from Vixen 7 had brought teaching aids for the village school. Because this village only has a kindergarten the alphabet pads were given to Mike, head at the kindie school, to pass on to the junior school in the next village. Mike is about 60 years old, a kindly man, and together with his young female helper they run the pre-school for a dozen boys and girls. The children are charming, polite, quiet whilst listening and full of joy when they sang their favourite nursery songs for us. Although they sing in Fijian the tunes were instantly recognisable as old favourites such as Frere Jacques, Fly away Peter, Fly away Paul, Itsy Bitsy spider. David knew all the words.
We left the children playing and embarked on a hike to the other side of the island. Mike pointed out the path and an arduous 5 minutes later we stepped out onto yet another pristine and deserted white beach. At one end there were rock pools for young Eva to play in and at the other end lots of shells for Pam to collect.
Embarassingly we lost our way on the path back and wandered back through the pig pens and the gardens. Not a good omen for people who are supposed to be navigating around the world! Captain Cook would have been most disappointed.
