Iles des Pines specialises in shallow anchorages. Baie de Gadgi on the northern tip is one of these requiring eyeball navigation to come through the pass in the outer reef and then eyeballing the channel between two coral bommies and anchoring in 4m of water. It was well worth it to send some time in this sublimely gorgeous place. The big island is composed of limestone which has been uplifted hence the preponderance of caves both on land and underwater. Above water the soft rock has been eroded to make the fine white sand of the beaches and to leave mushroom stacks topped with tenacious vegetation. With a weather change due next day we left after only one night to head back to the main island, Grand Terre.
