| Baie Ugo with Jackster away in the distance |
We're the only boat here and enjoying the solitude. Away to the south is the entrance to a seawater river and the posh Meridien Hotel. This seawater river gets it's feed from the sea washing over a break in the reef and flowing through a natural swimming pool into the lagoon where we are anchored. The river is tidal – only navigable by dinghy at high water. We opted to take the kayak – no problem if we touch the bottom and no problem if the water recedes and we have to carry it some of the way. I also like to quietness of paddling, better still if David paddles and I take the photos. There were sea eagles above us and about 6” of water below us.
Around the bend and the river opens up to reveal the swimming pool. This is the stuff of postcards; white sands, azure water and verdant pine trees reaching up to blue skies. We had the place to ourselves for about two minutes before the first day trippers appeared on the path from the hotel.
A swim, a walk on the beach and then time to head back on the falling tide when the kayak did touch bottom several times.
