Sunday 2 to Thursday 6 March Butang group

Rawi island

Twenty five miles NW from Langkawi are four islands called the Butang Group, a national park belonging to Thailand. We didn't have a lot of information before we arrived so it was a pleasant surprise to find a decent number of park mooring balls dotted around, clear water and quiet and peaceful place.

South of Rawi island I went snorkelling which was nice but strangely not many fish. In the same spot we took an easy walk into the island following a stream up to a small waterfall accompanied by two local dogs. They were our guides, happy to show us the way.

Our last night in Thailand was spent on the north side of Koh Lipe which is the smallest and most developed of the group. The park mooring is a long distance from the beach which we didn't think anything of at the time. North side of Lipe is a as laid back as Koh Phayam, some bungalows, a dive shop and a couple of places to eat. However, less than a mile away on the south side of the island it was all happening; many more restaurants and guests house, many dive shops and lots more people because this is where the ferry comes in and where the dive boats are based.

By the time we'd walked back to sunset beach the sun had gone down and we noticed so had the water level. Low tide was revealing the rocks and reef which extend out from the beach. We planned to have dinner at the bungalow restaurant, now there was no need to hurry; we'd have to wait for the water to come in before we could paddle ourselves back out to deeper water. In the end it wasn't a problem and we skimmed over safely without drama or grounding.
