This
evening we enjoyed our third event of the Sail East Malaysia Rally –
a seven course banquet at the conference centre adjacent to the
marina. It was an evening when cruisers did 'smart'. Every one
pulled out their best bib and tucker, some even admitted using an
iron, and presented a fine show of spruce for our hosts, the Johor
Ministry of Tourism. The invitation included everyone staying in the
marina regardless of whether they were part of the rally and an equal
number of Malaysian people who are either attached to tourism or to
the marina.

Before
we ate there were speeches of welcome and thanks. David was asked by
Sazli, the rally organiser, to thank the Ministry on behalf of the
cruisers. He gave a wonderful (OK I'm biased), eloquent thank you
highlighting the warmth and kindness the Malaysians we meet as we
travel and with just one witticism and no jokes.
There
was a band, dancers and singers to entertain us as a succession of
platters were brought to the tables. By the end of the evening we
were happy, well fed, sailors.
