Wednesday 8 October Kabui Bay

After escaping from Waisai yesterday afternoon we came into the big, and very sheltered, Kabui bay.  It was late in the day so we motored to the east side and dropped the anchor in 22m of sand off mangroves.   It was a delightfully peaceful night.

This morning we continued into Kabui bay looking for an anchorage on the east side of the Kabui Pass, a dog legged channel which separates Gam island from Waigeo island.  With care for the fast flowing currents it is navigable by boat and our friends have used it.  The minimum depth seems to be 3.2m to 3.5m depending on the tide and how close one is to the inside of the bend.  While it's not our plan to take Jackster through we do want to explore and snorkel the area.
When we arrived Geoff and Diane on Heather May were anchored in a sweet spot between small islands with room for us to join them. They invited us on board for sundowners.  However, this evening it was the moonrise and not the sunset that was the star event.  It just happened to be a total eclipse of the moon; the earth passed between the sun and moon and put the moon in shadow.  Something neither of us has seen before. It took two hours to go from partial shadow to full and then another two before the earth moved out of the way and we had full moonlight once more.
