The
move from Singapore to Penang has felt like a slog, more like a
delivery than cruising for pleasure. This is partly because we have
a deadline to be in Langkawi and part due to limited anchorages on
the west coast. Each day we started pre-dawn and beat feet up the
coast to the next anchorage. This time we did go up two rivers and
enjoyed quieter water than in previous visits, Sungai Bernam was a
big
improvement on the open roadstead where three boats have been hit
by fishing boats passing in the night. Even three miles up the
river some fishing boats passed closer than we would have. One
afternoon a long tailed fishing boat cut so close across our bow I
could have reached out and given him a high five.

Yesterday
afternoon we came up the Straits between Penang and Butterworth and
anchored on the northern end of the island. Using the high tide this
morning we could enter Straits Quay Marina – even at HW we had 0.0m
under the keel in the entrance. One of the drawbacks of building a
marina on a reclaimed mud flat – it needs to be dredged regularly.
Though we are not complaining; Straits Quay is a well run, well
designed small marina with excellent facilities and surrounded by
retail therapy outlets, restaurants, two big supermarkets within a
short walk and buses to Georgetown.
