Ten
miles east from Port Royal is French Harbour, supposed to be a
favourite spot for cruisers, but fairly empty at the moment. At
Fantasy Island marina there might be fifteen long term residents and
out on anchor they were six boats. The entrance through the reef
takes care and someone on the bow. I'd found the waypoints on
Noonsite.com and checked these against Google Earth imagery for
verification. No problem for our 2.1m draft.
Coming
in to a new anchorage you focus on where will be the best and safest
place to park, check the depth gauge, see how the other boats are
lying, consider the prevailing wind direction and look for areas
where there might be boat traffic. Once you've got the hook down and
backed down on it you relax, start to look around and take note of
the finer details of your new surroundings.
With
the binoculars we scanned the shore and checked the boats in Fantasy
Island marina, found dive mooring balls on the outer reef, a resort
on Little French Cay, a tiger on Big French cay, private houses and
found a possible restaurant. Did I really say tiger? Yes. Later
investigations revealed a mini zoo of exotic animals were being kept
in locations around the lagoon.
