For the last year we've been at the mercy of Serendipity when looking for a hairdresser. Where we have found has ranged from excellent to tearful (me) and cost between $6 and $25. Our best experiences were in Samana in Dominican Republic in January. The girl who cut my hair couldn't speak English, my Spanish very patchy, but I walked out with a chic crop worthy of a top London salon for a mere $6. David found an enthusiastic young barber with perfect English who trimmed, coiffed, gelled and gave him a traditional wet shave all for $3. From the best to the worst in St Thomas, USVI where the sheep shearer (for that is what she was) interpreted 'short chic' as shaven and took the clippers to me. I looked like an 8 year old boy and walked out in tears. The lesson I learned is to persuade David go first so I can check how the hairdressers.
This hit and miss method of maintaining our grooming has led us to buying our own electric clippers. Many other cruisers already have some and they don't look hacked. David says when my hair gets too long I have the bouffant look like Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie. He just looks like the wild man of the Pennines.
We found the perfect tool at an out of town warehouse. It's rechargeable or mains operated so we can cut on deck and has different length blades from 1” for me to marine #1 for David. We're both too short to use it yet, perhaps another 3 weeks until David is ready to be the first model, or victim. I'll post before and after photos so you can judge.
