30 December, Whangarei to Urquharts Bay

Seven days in a town is enough for us. We've charged the boat batteries, done our fill of retail therapy, walked the walks and caught up with friends. Now we're ready for some more of the (justifiably) beautiful NZ nature and going back to anchoring.
Whangarei river below the town basin is shallow as it meanders out of the plain before widening into a deep estuary. If we didn't want to spend a few hours with our keel stuck in mud we had to wait for high tide. High tide today was 4pm giving us time for a final run to the marina laundry and to take on a full quota of fruit, vegetables and mince pies. There's a long journey ahead and as the Galley Captain it's my responsibility for the health of the crew.
On queue at 4pm the waters rose and fell. The tide was in and rain was falling. Two hours motoring with an outgoing tide got us to Urquharts Bay at the river mouth. Hook down, job done.
