Monday 27 June Mokagi Island

Makongi village
Yesterday we motored in the rain from Koro to Mokagi, a former leper colony and now a centre for breeding giant clams. Coming in through the eastern pass guess who got wet and cold on the bow on reef watch? Me, but better than falling foul of a submerged bommie. Despite all the dire warnings of using the eastern pass it was straight forward with no less than 16m under the keel. We anchored in front of the settlement on the southern island.
A NZ boat (Vixen 7 with Ross and Pam on board) hailed us on the get in to get co-ordinates for the pass and then very kindly shared a 41lbs yellow fin tuna they had caught on the way over. Yellow fin is the best fillet mignon of the fish world – divine as sashimi and delicious when grilled rare.
The rain has fallen steadily and the wind gusted from every direction since we arrived. Kept indoors we read and watched a couple of films and ate more tuna.
