Saturday 11 May Mud crab feast

from crab pot....

...to cooking pot

Mud crab. It's not the kind of description to make your mouth water. A creature that lives in wet dirt shouldn't taste good, but they do. We've now eaten mud crab and it is delicious, as sweet as lobster meat and more of it than for an animal the same size.
Our friends Bruce and Sue set their crab pot baited with a tin of cat food (the cat food is held in a sock suspended within the pot) in one of the side creeks at high water and a few hours later they'd caught a big one. Their claws are big and strong, apparently strong enough to take off a finger if you were silly enough to get near them.
Bruce and Sue took him back to Chilli Heat to boil him up and dress him. They throw out all the brown body meat and serve only the claws and legs. There was enough meat to feed six as a generous started. I know if anyone offers mud crab again I'll be first to say 'yes please'.
