Route
62, or the Klein Karoo Wine Route, is claimed as the longest and most
diverse wine route of South Africa's wine regions. True it is long
and we found many wineries as we drove from Oudtshoorn towards Cape
Town between two spectacular mountain ranges – the Langeberge and
Swartberge mountains. It is a far prettier road than the N2 which we
drove out on.

It
was still morning but I insisted on stopping to investigate and
taste. The wine cellars are more perhaps less grand than those we
visited in Franschoek but their wines are very good and the welcomes
were warm. The road passes through some very pretty, historic
villages like Barrydale where I could have shopped and lingered
longer except we still had miles to cover and a little cat waiting to
see us. (Our friends were checking on her morning and night so she
wasn't entirely abandoned.)
We
finished our trip with buying a half case of Pinotage from Montagu
Wines, a late lunch in the town and then it was back on the road and
home.
