river otter |
We
stayed some extra days in Annapolis to fit the new Raymarine chart
plotter and radar before beginning our journey south towards Norfolk.
The temperatures are dropping, the winter storms are beginning up in
the New England area so like the swallows we need to begin our
migration to a warmer place.
We
work our way south on the west side of the Chesapeake in day hops.
Day one is half a day to an anchorage under cliffs and views of
pretty houses on the beach. No more to say really as we didn't get
off the boat.
Our
second stop was at Solomon's Island where the anchorage is in the
river between marinas and close to the Calvert Maritime Museum. This
late in the season the village is quiet and there was plenty of room
to anchor with 6 other boats. We stayed here three night waiting for
a southerly blow to pass. There was lots of time to go to the
museum. It's not particularly big, but the collection is diverse and
very well presented from the usual boats and historical maritime
industries, palaeontology of the Chesapeake, a lighthouse, old ships,
a pool of rays and, for me the best thing, river otters. The museum
has a large indoor / outdoor enclosure with three river otters. Here
we are watching them play in their outdoor pool.
