25 January Wall Diving and lobsters at Punta Frances

Wow! We love Punta Frances. We're anchored in 4.5m in crystal clear water, pure sand, flat seas, surrounded by a long white beach and we have the best wall dive in Cuba (according to the Waterway Guide) half a mile from the big boat.

The diving is very good. We take the dinghy to the top of the wall and anchor in 8m of sand between the spur and grooves that lead us out to the drop off. Visibility is easily 40m, perhaps 50m with no current to drag us away, there are lobsters (one or two less by the time we left) plenty of fishes, a sleeping nurse shark and no-one else is here. It's pristine reef.

Before hurricane Irma in 2016 there was a small cruise ship anchorage which brought in tourists to a rangers station and restaurant and bar in the next bay. With the landing jetty destroyed and yet to be rebuilt the rangers guard the park for the occasional passing yachties.

We took the dinghy around to visit the two gentlemen and they were very welcoming. With our standard mix of my poor Spanish and their limited English we had a chat and read the park information boards. This is paradise and my personal favourite stop in Cuba.

We stayed in Punta Frances for blissful four days until we had the next weather window of opportunity to continue eastwards under Isla Juventud to Cayo Mathias.

wow!
