When
it came to renewing our visitor visas for the third and last time it
was quick and simple. Our first stop was the bank to buy CuC50 ($50) worth
of stamps and on a Monday morning there aren't any queues. Then we
cycled to the Immigration office a mile away near to the bus station
and were directed to sit and wait. In less than five minutes we were
called up and a kindly manager who spoke English asked why we wanted
to extend. I explained we were on a yacht and wished to sail from
Cienfuegos to Santiago de Cuba. Then a lady took our passports and
the stamps, glanced out our DAN emergency health insurance, and
issued the extension. The total time from start to finish was two
hours. Considering in Havana we queued at the bank for an hour and
three quarters just to purchase the stamps this was like comparing
100m sprint with a marathon.
Three
cheers for the more relaxed attitude on the south coast.
