Today
is the Captain's birthday and for the first time in a number of years
we are at anchor rather than on passage. This years' present was
somewhat unique – a 10lbs red snapper from a commercial fishing
boat on a mooring next to us. Since Monday, four days ago, fishing
has been allowed to restart in the Caymans. These boats may be
registered in Georgetown but the crew are from Honduras. They been
out far from land and brought in 4 tonnes of fish to sell less one
for David.
Once
filleted it yielded enough meat for three meals. Tonight we're
having salmon. At £14 per pound / £30 a kilo it is a special
treat. A Swiss couple made the comparison to food shopping at home
and declared Caymans is more expensive than Switzerland.
I gave
David a good bottle of Pinot Noir. What else do you give the man who
declares he wants no presents? Look what I gave us last week - a bottle of local gin which came with a gift-with-purchase rum cake.
