We
spent three wonderful, relaxing days in the lagoon at Cape Lookout.
During the day we had the company of six other yachts anchored at a
polite distance from each other and plenty of day visitors in fishing
boats and family cabin cruisers come to enjoy the sheltered waters.
There were dolphins and lots of turtles, pelicans diving for supper, terns flying and dipping to
catch fish. At night it was silent. The day trippers had returned
to their home docks and it was just us and nature.
In
the morning we would take the kayak and paddle ashore for a walk
among the extensive sand dunes and along the inner beach to the most
southerly point. Behind the dunes we discovered more shallow lagoons
under careful watch of the local herons.
There
were houses on the south shore we couldn't reach from the beach –
there is a road connecting the east side to the mainland. One wooden
house had collapsed and was gradually returning to the land.
