Our
intended summer residence is the Chesapeake river, whether that be in
a quiet backwater or Annapolis for haul out later in the season. We
just have to cover the 850nm from Key West either in one leap, or
smaller hops.
First
we're going to hop 200nm to West Palm Beach entering from the ocean
through the Lake Worth Inlet and anchor in Lake Worth. It was a
predictable motoring and sailing in no wind or light wind conditions,
but with up to 3 knots of push from the Gulf Stream which flows close
to Florida the coast. Motoring past Miami there is light traffic,
mostly fishing charter boats, no cruise ships steaming in or out. We
turn into the Lake Worth inlet in the afternoon and follow the
eastern channel south with good depth all the way, past the mooring
field and find a big gap opposite Rybovitch mega yacht marina and
Palm Beach Sailing Club. We have a quiet night and are happy to have
so much space around us as we dance around our anchor under the
influence of current and wind. Next morning a tender from the
marina approaches us and the driver politely advises we are on the
edge of the unmarked deep water channel used by the super yachts
coming and going. That's why it was such a good space. We re-anchor
400m further south at 26°44.87N 080°.02.64 in 5m. There's still
plenty of room to dance and now we are 400m closer to the free public
docks in the city centre.
