Falmouth harbour looking south
One of the many forts over looking the north side of Falmouth Harbour is Fort George atop Monks Hill (Mr Monk owned the farm land it is built on) reached by a path that starts close to the entrance to Catamaran marina. We've done it before and enjoyed the spectacular views so went for another visit.
The walk begins on a road past smart properties and then becomes a steep dirt track meandering around the gradient. Near to the top you can look across Antigua and see the capital, St Johns and the north lagoon before turning to the gatehouse and into the ruins of the fort.
It was built in the 17th century to protect the island from invasion and as a safe place to retreat to for the settlers living at the foot of the bluff in Falmouth village. Today we walk up the hill for the spectacular views across the sea to Montserrat, Nevis, and on a clear day, Guadeloupe and the pesky French 40 miles south.
