22 March SV Norn visit

Our invitation to see the engine room of super yacht Norn was for 11am. When we left the party last night I had given Chris the Chief Engineer one of our boat cards in case he needed to get in touch and to show we are bona fide cruisers.

We learned at the end of our tour he had used the picture of Jackster on our card and the exterior cameras to find us in the anchorage and was able to see when we got in the dinghy to come ashore.

As we walked up to Norn Chris was waiting and politely explained our tour was only to be the engine room, not the private areas. The door to the engine room is directly opposite the gangway onto the ship so we only had a few steps on the hallowed deck, but is the boat looks impressive from the outside the engine room is a gleaming cathedral of polished steel, immaculately clean, deliciously cool and as clean as an operating theatre. Chris has been with the owner for more than 8 years, was Chief Engineer on the last boat and designed the engine room on this one.

There are two V16 engines which are started with compressed air, not an electric charge, waste water purification systems, a bank of lithium batteries housed in a fire proof room and kept at 14c, a room of spare parts. It is massive.

After the engine room we took a peak in the control room which has four computer screens for controls and the close circuit TV screen showing Jackster centre and a quick hello to the chefs in their galley and the crews dining room and lounge area. I think we were told there were 28 crew.

What a treat to see the inner workings. I didn't ask if I could take photos, it didn't seem polite but we have our memories, but should you want photos of our engine room we'd be happy to share. It's not as big, nor as clean, but it is ours.
