While I had the sewing machine (a Sailrite with walking foot, ideal for tough jobs and thick materials) out and the time we also replaced the now clear plastic in the bimini side panels. Constant sunshine has degraded the material rendering them cloudy and brittle.
A few months ago when we were in the marina I took rubbish to the bins and discovered that the sail shop had chucked three rolls of 1mm thick clear plastic. Each had between 2 and 3 metres lengths and thus one persons surplus became this ladies’ upcycling opportunity.
Unpicking the stitching was a whole family job, but she was paid more than minimum wage in juvenile trevally.
