Monday 18 October The nice man at the ministry

High St, Pangai
The man at the Customs office was very nice to us and stamped our papers to show we'd cleared in to the Ha'apai island group and stamped them again to clear us out to Nuku'alofa. The town of Pangai is a sleepy place, more village than town with one main road, a couple of sell everything shops, anything from felt Santa Claus hats and Christmas lights to a loaf of bread, the post office is a counter in the Customs building, a police station, a fire station and one café run by a NZ guy and his Polish wife for the cruisers and back packers who pass through the island.
Mariner's Cafe
Ice cream shop
Today was hot, really hot. The skies were the perfect blue without a cloud and there wasn't a breath of breeze. We stopped at the Mariners Café for an internet fix and then lunch. The Mariners have kept a visitors log book for the last five years and from this they track how many boats pass through in the season from May to November. The average number is 80 to 90, in 2008 this shot up to 184 and 2010 is going to be another bumper year. Why so many people when the world economy is struggling? Is there a connection or is this a coincidence?
