Saturday 15 September Diving Simi's Maze

Two miles out from Malakati village is a dive site known as Simi's Maze (GPS 16 51 059S 177 24 164E). We've heard about it from other divers, from dive shops but never known exactly where it was. With the help of Ty from the village and his big aluminium skiff we finally did the dive.

Of course Ty knew just where to look for the buoy marking the spot. He collected us early morning and we sped out in a choppy sea. David and I were first in; a backward roll from a fishing boat bouncing on the chop was no problem. Ross and other David followed us in and we descended the mooring line into the first deep gully. There was very little current which was surprising and equally, very few fish or life on the ancient coral. This is a dive for the topography – swimming through deep cleaves, ascending between overhangs, one swim through. On the top of the reef, at 6m where we did our safety stop there was an anemone and some large clown fish guarding their territory. A good dive? Yes, any dive you come back from is a good dive. Maybe we've been spoilt but for us Simi's Maze wasn't as interesting as the tunnels and swim throughs we were shown off Kadavu island last year.
