The Sail
East Malaysia Rally 2014 began for us with an afternoon tea
reception at the Danga Bay marina in Johor Bahru. A chance for many
of the 28 boats taking part to meet over a cuppa and a samosa. We
spent the afternoon taking with old chums Sue and Bill of Camomile
who we haven't seen since Indonesia last October.
Earlier
in the day I'd begun a new project to recover the helm wheel. The
original has been looking most sad and tired for a couple of years;
the leather has dried and deteriorated to unacceptable. This year I
was determined to give it a full facelift. We'd tried in Thailand
and Malaysia to buy leather and to find someone with the skills to do
the job but without luck. In the end I sourced just what I wanted in
London's East End – soft, supple, Spanish cowhide in the just the
right shade of tan to match the original. Now I've got the leather,
the wheel and an aspiration; I just need to combine the three.
