What is an Admeasurer? The man who we pay to measure the length of Jackster and deliver the good news that we are more than 50' long. In the stepped scale of charges boats under 50' pay less. Mr Eric measured, couldn't tell us why he is an Admeasurer, only that it is a nautical term, did lots of paperwork, asked hundreds of questions incluing maximum boat speed, litres per hour used, amount of fuel on board, anchor and the last 3 countries we'd visited.
Our next step is to go to the bank when it reopens after the Mardi Gras carnival on Wednesday noon, pay our fees and then phone that evening to get our transit date and time. Each evening we've sat and watched between 3 and 6 yachts turn up on the Flats in the late afternoon and disappear off to the locks as the sun is going down. For passages from north to south and we the Canal authorities send yachts up the locks to the Gatun lake in the evening, moor overnight in the lake and continue onwards to the down locks the next morning.
