Forced to stay home because there is nowhere we can dinghy out to (and come home alive with a dinghy) we had a radical rethink on how we are using our storage space. Yesterday the officer in charge of Provisions and a Happy Crew (me) did an inventory of what provisions we have on board and what we need to buy in Panama City to feed us for a seven month transit of the Pacific. Tinned goods, dry goods, herbs and spices to tart it up, toilet rolls, toothpaste, etc. It isn't impossible to buy provisions as you travel through the islands, simply very expensive. Taking the humble can of beer as a guide, in a warehouse in Panama City it may cost 25p a can. In French Polynesia it is £3.50 a can. If you can find a supermarket.
Can you imagine buying enough food for eight months? The extra month is 'just in case' stocks. Just in case we take longer than we'd planned. Just in case I've under estimated how much we'll eat. How many pounds of gingernuts will David munch his way through? The tea bag estimate is 1,000 (4 or 5 cups for 238 days). All of this needs storing so we set about rationalising cupboards and find we have lots of room for lots of food so we won't starve or go short of a cup of tea and a ginger biscuit before NZ.
