Our 10th day at anchor in beautiful Oponuhu Bay, Moorea. With two birthdays in the anchorage today a potluck dinner on the beach has been organised. A great turnout with at least 15 boats taking part. There are picnic tables on the beach where we laid out our dish-to-share and brought along our own plates, cutlery and drinks. I'd made chilli con carne and others brought a paella, chicken teriyaki, potato salad, salads, steak, pasta dishes, rice, cheese and young guys on Delos who'd been crab hunting in the afternoon brought a big pan of freshly cooked crabs. The two birthday boats treated us with birthday cakes to share.
Frank, an American, is an astronomer and he gave a talk on the total eclipse that is happening here on the 11th of this month. It was meant to be for all the children, but the adults were just as rapt and full of questions. If we were 400 miles south of Tahiti or in one of the atolls of the Tuamotus we'd be able to see the 100% eclipse, here in Moorea it will be 97%. We'll see something but no plans to divert 400 miles without the guarantee of no clouds that morning.
The party rapped up with a big bonfire and Fergus of Pylades playing the accordion and singing Irish folk songs. Just for the crack.
