Thursday 15 July Bora Bora Sharks

We've done a couple of dives on the outside of the fringing reef. Conveniently there are four buoys installed where you can tie your dinghy. On the first dive we had schools of tangs and spadefish under the dinghy when we arrived and about 25 black tip sharks swimming around us when we descended. Add 2 morays and that is the sum total of what we saw. The floor is bare coral, no plants and very few fish. David thought the sharks were more friendly than usual because the commercial dive operators are feeding them. They certainly weren't frightened of us.

The second dive next morning was from a different buoy and a deeper dive. We dropped 15m onto the bare coral ledge, swam out to the drop off and followed the edge along. This time we saw a BIG shark; a lemon, 4m long and with a torso like a tree trunk. He came right at us, close, and I didn't think he looked friendly at all, evil teeth and small, pale eyes. David and I flattened to the sea bed while our less shark experienced friend stayed high taking photos. We looked at Jack and thought 'decoy'. Big boy came in close and checked us out 3 more times. He made the black tips seem very small.
