Wednesday 7 July Sailing to Raiatea

There was fine weather this morning to sail the 26 miles to Raiatea. Before we left I popped into town in the dinghy to buy baguettes, which are currently daily essentials, and pick up fresh vegetables and cheese to go with the baguettes.

We had a fine sail made even better by our first sighting of whales. David and I were chatting and something caught my eye right next to the boat. A puff of water. Only one thing that could be – whales. We had a couple of pilot whales, about 15' to 20' long on the surface, as we sailed past. We did turn around to go back and see some more but by now we had the engine on and they kept their distance. A great sighting and from now until November is whale season from here through to Tonga so we'll keep a good lookout for sperm whales. First because we want to see them and second because we don't want to run into one.
