Wednesday 10 November Kerikeri

Gary invited us to join him on a trip to the hardware shop just outside Opua but when we got they didn't have the paint he needed so Plan B came in, pick up Gary's wife and head 20 miles north to the larger town of Kerikeri. There was more beautiful scenery to admire, more cows than sheep to count, as we flashed past wineries, organic farms and lots of plant nurseries on the way in and when we arrived there were the further delights of large DIY stores, bakeries, banks, lots of estate agents and a big supermarket. We'd been transported to consumer heaven.
From the DIY shop we picked up a couple of folding chairs, the sort you'd take to the beach for a beach barbecue when you don't want to sit on the sand and get bitten by the sand bugs. A delightful bakery fed us a delicious fresh sandwiches and coffee for lunch leaving the food shop for last. Jackster's provision are depleted after 3 months of cruising the more remote islands. Here we can gorge on real mushrooms, asparagus, strawberries, buy olives and cheese – the essentials.
