Tuesday, 21 December Escape from Whangaroa

While we continued to be trapped in the bay at Whangaroa by torrential rain on Sunday and a fog white out yesterday, I worked on setting up an alternative electronic navigation system while David got frustrated trying to find the fault in our Raymarine system.
Today we woke up and could see at least a mile meaning the fog had finally shifted. Time to leave. We'd hooked up a hand held GPS to a laptop with a programme called Nimble Navigator with our planned route laid out. It worked perfectly. We could see where we were and the cherry on the cake was wind from the right direction. Hallelujah! There were more penguins out for a swim and we covered over 50 miles and spent the night snuggled into the sheltered Whangaruru harbour.
If you're wondering about the number of place name beginning with Whanga, which is pronounced 'fanga' if you are politically correct and 'wh' as in what if you're not PC, is the Maori word for harbour.
