Saturday 4 February Punga Bay

Yesterday was cold wind from the south. The good news is the wind has dropped. The bad is we have sea fog. David and Greg dived for more scallops while I stayed dry and warm aboard. The boys' had planned to go lobster hunting in the afternoon but in light of the poor conditions we moved over to Punga Bay in Endeavour Inlet. Endeavour as in Captain Cook's ship Endeavour. In the 1770s he spent many months here doing repairs and provisioning from the Maoris. The bay to the north is Resolution Bay after another of his ships on another visit. Once more we follow the legacy of Captain Cook and his Whitby built ships.

Punga Bay in Endeavour Inlet is a pretty bay backed by the Punga Resort and surrounded by bachs. A bach is peculiar to NZ and a shortening of bachelor which denoted small houses built by single men who settled and made their homes here. Most date from the interwar period and were meant to be temporary. Today they are holiday homes and some even have preservation orders. So there's a resort, bachs, mooring balls for yachts and easy access to the 50 mile Queen Charlotte walking track.
We rafted up to Inspiration Lady on the same mooring ball so can step from boat to boat with ease. On the slopes above us there's verdant forest of native and introduced trees, ie firs, brought by settlers and a deafening cacophony of cicadas perpetually tuning their instruments.
