Wednesday 15 February The road trip begins - Coast road to Christchurch

The first day of our South Island road trip began under overcast skies. Inspiration Lady and Jackster are left securely on mooring balls and what seems like half our worldly goods are squeezed into Gary's Subaru estate car. And I thought I packed with minimum requirements – bigger car needed or less wet weather & cold weather gear. If this had been Fiji we'd have packed it all in a day pack and still had room for a second swimsuit.

Dozing female seal
Road trip away! First stop a sweet shop for chocolate covered fruit. Second stop a seal colony next to the highway but it was raining hard by now so we rolled down the window, went ahh! rolled up the window and continued on to Kaikoura.
The peninsula at Kaikoura is a top spot to see whales, dolphins and more seal due to a unique geological feature. A kilometre offshore the sea is 1000m and rises sharply bringing nutrients and sperm whales close to the shore to feast on the squid. The dolphins also enjoy the fish feast and the sea lions lounge on the rocks during the day posing for photographs. Some prefer the warmth of the wooden walkways.
The boys - John, Gary & David
Late afternoon we arrived at Sue and John's house on the outskirts of Christchurch. Gary and Jackie had introduced us to them up in the Sounds where they keep their sail boat. After so long living on a boat it was a lovely treat to be in a house with all that room. The boys went out into the four car garage and flew John's radio controlled helicopter. David's been telling everyone he's a helicopter pilot. In his dreams! Also in his dreams is to have his own radio controlled 'copter.
