A
change to the forecast this morning showing northerly winds beginning
today inspired us to lift anchor and go for Sydney. Within 30
minutes of deciding to go we were on our way. It was a wonderful
sail; clear skies and light winds but with a south setting current of
up to 3.5 knots we were making 9 knots over ground from 10 knots of
breeze. The light breeze dropped in the night and we motored at low
revs but with the aid of the East Australian Current making 8 knots
an hour progress. The only downside is this is a busy shipping
channel. At one time we had two freighters coming from behind and
one approaching our nose – all of them knew we were there because
we saw them alter course to give us sea room. It's reassuring to
know they have someone on the bridge on lookout but then it is a busy
route. Hitting a yacht might scratch their paint work, hitting
another freighter would spoil their day.
