Moreton
Island is a national park and the waters off it a protected marine
park. Over the last few days we've watched osprey's landing on the
wrecked dredgers, white breasted sea eagles soaring over the
anchorage, a glimpse of a dugong and a couple of times a large
loggerhead has surfaced next to
the boat and there is a small pod of bottlenose dolphins leisurely
cruising the water hunting for a fish or two.

I
wanted to visit the resort this morning to pick up a loaf of bread at
the shop and to drop off our rubbish so we took the dinghy up to the
main pier and found a dolphin close inshore. Being as quiet as
possible we got close and took a photo or two. Later at the National
Parks office we discovered this is a special dolphin, Bella is an old
lady, fortyish they think, blind in one eye, no teeth and needs care.
The rangers hand feed the dolphins every evening by the pier and
know each one by name. Poor Bella but at least they're taking care
of her.

Before
we went to the shop we took a walk to the top of the hill to take in
the view. It was only after we started the walk barefoot (because we
hadn't planned to go further than the shop) I brought up the subject
of all the critters that bite, poison and sting found in the
undergrowth and then when the tarmac burnt our toes we wished we'd
brought our shoes.
